The Black Penny is a coffee shop and kitchen inspired by the ‘Penny Universities’ of the 1600s – the first coffee shops to appear in England, where all you needed was a penny for your coffee, and you could join in with the intellectual conversations.
The interior boasts a contrast of modern architecture and historic elements, with features such as diamond vault doors and a centuries-old stove-place surrounded by exposed brick and wood paneling.
Popular breakfast dishes include British favourites such as the full English, named The Hunter, as well as The Gatherer (its veggie counterpart). Their mouth-watering brioche French toast and the crispy duck hash are also customer favourites. Those looking for something quick and simple can be tempted by the spread of granola, yoghurt and cakes across the counter.
The coffee at the Black Penny carries just as much praise as the food, sourced by the Roastery Department who create the coffee shop’s bespoke blend.
