Neighbourhood favourite, Fischer’s, is an informal restaurant and café evocative of Vienna in the early 20th century from restaurateurs, Corbin & King; the team behind The Wolseley. The space boasts dark wood furniture, black leather booth seating and a checkerboard marble floor, creating a sophisticated vibe that is certain to make any meal here feel like a special occasion.
For breakfast, viennoiserie with homemade butter and jam is a given, with cereals, fruit, yoghurts, tea and coffee to accompany it. Or, opt for a hot breakfast in the form of porridge, crispy bacon rolls or grilled kippers with mustard butter. Austrian pancakes (with apricot & brandy jam or hazelnut chocolate) are a popular choice, as are the many varieties of egg dishes on offer.
But it’s the Austrian specialities that really make it worth an early morning visit to this Marylebone High Street stalwart. Choose from two varieties of Gröstl – paprika-fried potatoes & onions with spinach or bacon, topped with a fried hen’s egg, or a Rösti – the pastrami and poached egg with mustard hollandaise being a favourite of those in the know. On the weekend, Fischer’s serves a plentiful brunch from 11.30am until late into the afternoon.
The Austrian influence doesn’t end with the food menu, as guests can try specialty Viennese coffees like the Einspänner, which used to be the traditional drink of Viennese coach drivers, made with two shots of espresso topped with thick cream serving as insulation for the hot beverage below. Alternatively, try the Schokoladengenuss (grand cru ‘kalinga’ chocolate served with a jug of hot full cream milk on the side).
Fischer’s ensures a certain number of tables are available on a first come first served basis, however breakfast and brunch can get particularly busy, so making a reservation in advance is recommended.
